RPDR S3E6: Where's Your Tuck Now, Queen?

"Now America's going to know why I'm single!"

Gratuitous glamour shot. We love Sarah Rue for dressing the part. We love Eliza Dushku because she's the cool chick in your high school who wears motorcycle jackets and smokes pot behind the bleachers while being way hotter than any of the cheerleaders.

Gratuitous booty shot.

Just 'cuz.

And we might as well follow it up with the bulges. Ru and Jane Lynch shop at the same stores, apparently.

OHMIGOD! Jane Lynch should be a guest judge! And she should do it in character as Sue Sylvester! In a sequined track suit! LOGO TV: This MUST happen next season!

These bitches are really shredding each other as the pool gets smaller, aren't they? Like a bunch of crabs in a barrel. That whole "Heathers" thing was eye-rollingly obnoxious. It would be one thing if the queens were having campy fun with it, but they were literally sitting around preening about how they're so much prettier and more popular than the other girls. Even if we buy that, say, Manila and Raja (who both have pretty sharp and wicked senses of humor) were playing it up, Delta seemed to buy the "I'm one of the popular girls" sentiment, hook, line and sinker. Yes, Shangela is annoying as hell and needs to learn that "keeping it real" while shooting your mouth off is the quickest way to get yourself ostracized from any group, but Delta really went after her on Untucked. Raja has a history with her and, at least on the surface, a dislike of her performing style. Delta just wanted to fight with someone and declare her popularity. It all got to be a bit much. In fact, the challenges seemed incidental to the drama. Maybe because the challenges were a bit off. Drag superstars don't generally pose naked or make cakes, so both the challenges and the results didn't really interest us all that much, although we really didn't think Carmen deserved to win the picture challenge:

Carmen Carrera

It was just all right. We thought the position of her leg looked odd.

Stacy Layne Matthews

All things considered, she did okay.

Delta Work

Both of the big girls did, and we were proud of them for having the courage and learning to have fun with it.

Raja

To our eyes, Raja was the obvious winner here. She just knows how to model on a level far beyond any of the other queens. Ru is a wildly inconsistent judge and it's pretty obvious that, while talent is part of the equation, the winners of each challenge are pretty much at the mercy of Ru's whims.

Shangela
Not bad.

Yara Sofia

Also not bad.

Manila Luzon

Strangely, and disappointingly, bad. She looks like she's trying to squeeze herself into the corner out of embarrassment.

Alexis Mateo

Pretty good. Best use of the fabric.

We suppose the argument could be made that the point of this challenge was to see how well the contestants can evoke their drag personae without the use of the typical tools of drag. So, okay. It makes sense. But you can't get us to buy the cake challenge and you can't get us to believe that anyone other than Raja should have won the picture challenge.

We could shrug off the picture decision but we were going to throw pillows at our TV if Raja didn't win the runway.

Yes, her panniers were showing and we were kind of annoyed with her blase attitude about that, but the overall look TOTALLY fulfilled the dictates of the challenge and then some. This is the most "couture" of the looks on the runway and looks the most like the cake that inspired it.

Plus the cake itself was cool.

But we agreed with Billy's critique that her makeup, while impeccable, could have been a little less ghoulish. She defaults to that skeletal smokey eye too much.

And it's Sashay away for Miss Stacy Layne Matthews. She seems like a very sweet queen who lets her self esteem get the better of her now and then. She never seemed like a possibility for the finals, but she did pretty well, considering her lack of confidence and lack of polish.

It was obvious before the music even started who was going to win this lip synch. At her best, Stacy is an unsteady performer.

We didn't mind the top of this look. It was at least paying lip service to the idea of a couture look. But making stretch pants for the bottom is what ultimately killed it for her. We have no idea what kind of career she has in North Carolina, but Ru expects her queens to have some reference points for fashion, performing, and pop culture. Stacy couldn't mimic a couture look because she had no idea what Ru was asking of her.

And why does her face look so half-assed this week? She's come out looking a lot more sparkly and done up than that.

But we thought the message on her cake was sweet, and except for a few times when she was desperate for an ally and found one in the smack-talking Shangela, Stacy managed to be a lady throughout the competition and left like one.

Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party - Part 1

Sparkles and famewhores!

Ashley Bell in Catherine Deane

So bland it's practically invisible.

Ashley Tisdale in Jenny Packham Spring 2011

Ditto.

Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan let us tell you what we wanna do; we'll take you in our arms and fill you with our charms later. FIRST thing we have to do is get you out of your bell-bottomed Elizabethan jumpsuit, girl, because it is doing you NO favors.

Cheryl Tiegs

Chery Tiegs apparently doesn't own a full-length mirror. That is SO not flattering her and the Bumpit isn't helping.

Dave Annable

Looks good.

Florence Welch in Valentino Spring 2011 Couture

She definitely likes to be covered up, doesn't she? We think this may be our favorite of her 3 looks of the night. Very pretty and romantic, but more modern-looking than the Ingalls nightgown she wore on the RC for the Oscars.

Hayden Panettiere in Luca Luca

Time traveling 40-year old Hayden Panettiere from the year 2029 has still got it, amirite?

Heidi Klum in Julien MacDonald Fall 2009

This is a "don't touch me, I'm fabulous" dress if ever there was one. Give her a friendly pat on the back and you'll be sitting in the emergency room with your thumb in a cup. WAY too much, Kluminator.

Holly Robinson Peete

Simple but pretty.

Jessalyn Gilsig in Romona Keveza Spring 2011

We're not even going to look up her age. If she's older than 21, she's too old for this dress. It's cute, but it should be on Dakota Fanning.

Katie Price

Sure, we can all laugh at these inflatable celebrity bodies now, but when penis enlargement is perfected, vapid male famewhores will be walking around with cocker-spaniel-sized bulges in their pants and this won't seem so funny, will it?

Kim Kardasahian in J. Mendel

Standard for her. It's a nice enough dress (although we almost never like the mermaid silhouette), but she's established herself as someone who can dress well; now it's time to show she can change up her look. We've seen her like this plenty of times.

Leah Remini

We realize it's not a formal event, but this seems a little half-hearted.

Malin Akerman in Roberto Cavalli

We like it. It's got a nice graphic quality to it while maintaining the glam factor. She's inconsistent on the RC, but this is one of her better looks.

Maria Conchita Alonso

If Sofia Vergara is, as we've maintained, Charo 2.0, then that must mean Maria Conchita here is Charo 1.5.

Michael Vartan

Cute.

Darius Danesh and Natasha Henstridge

His tux appears to fit him terribly and we're not in love with the current vogue for white ties. She looks like a cable access Creature Double Feature host.

Odette Yustman in Monique Lhuillier Spring 2011

Enh. S'alright.

Rufus Wainwright

Here at last is the long-awaited illustration to go with the Wikipedia entry entitled "Douche (Gay)."

Natalie Portman Severs Ties with Galliano

Handled it exactly right.

Celebrity meltdowns aren't exactly novel to the public. In fact, they're pretty much ubiquitous at this point. When one celebrity meltdown runs its course (Mel Gibson), there's another one ready to jump into the deep end of the crazy pool (Charlie Sheen) and keep tongues wagging. It seems we now live in a world where we're all just waiting for the next pampered and overpaid entertainer to collapse under the mountainous twin pressures of wealth and global adulation.

But the fashion world "enjoys" this sort of thing far less frequently; partially because, unlike the entertainment world, the fashion world is very much a closed loop (and something of an echo chamber). Fashion has no fewer extreme personalities than the entertainment industry, but the insiders and power brokers tend to do a better job of keeping their dirty laundry inside. Plus, the press is less likely to be hounding any of the major figures in the industry, at least in comparison to entertainment celebrities, so meltdowns and breakdowns are far less likely to be exposed to the public. Well, fashion industry, the public has iPhones now.

You've no doubt heard this by now, but John Galliano, head designer for Christian Dior, unleashed an ugly anti-semitic rant on a couple of people in a Paris restaurant and unfortunately for him, they caught it all on video. This is after an earlier, similar event at the same bar, which led to him being suspended from Dior just a week before Paris Fashion Week, and subsequently fired by them today. And if that wasn't bad enough, this all went down right as Natalie Portman, the new face of its Miss Dior Cherie fragance, was about to pick up the Oscar for Best Actress and become, briefly, the most photographed woman in the world. At apparently the last minute, the actress rejected the Dior gown she was supposed to wear to the ceremony and instead went with a plum-colored Rodarte gown.

Natalie, who is Jewish, was asked about the Galliano incident backstage after she won her Oscar and was advised by (we presume) handlers to not answer the question. That's entirely understandable because that moment should have been about her and not about the ugliness emanating from someone with whom she has a business affiliation.

But she felt the need to speak out, apparently, and it's kind of refreshing to see a public figure excoriate another public figure's bad behavior, because they tend to protect their own more than not (see: Polanski, Roman). Here's Natalie's statement:

“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way.”

Good for her. It remains to be seen if there's going to be a breach of contract fight, but Dior would be insane to pursue this. As for the fashion industry itself, well...

"However, we aren’t clear about one thing: the video starts right at the moment when Galliano launches his tirade. So one or the other must be true: either whoever took it was a master of timing, or what we are seeing is a video created for this purpose. In other words, possibly it was made by holding the mobile in the hand waiting for the celebrity – evidently provoked – to explode."

"We don’t want to go on an obsessive search for hidden motives,
but perhaps behind this event are just some parvenus of journalistic scandal who, in our opinion, were waiting to have three minutes of video to sell to someone for a good deal."

Yes, you read that right. It's apparently the people Galliano said should be "gassed" like their "forefathers" that are the truly suspicious ones, according to Franca Sozzani, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia. Stay classy, fashion industry. And insular.

Book Review - Fifteen Minutes Outside

About the Book
Drawing inspiration from her own journey to get her family outside every day, Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids is a month-by-month collection of 365 easy and enjoyable ways to connect as a family and explore life outdoors.

Rebecca said her family not only became closer after the year end, but experienced great health benefits through fun physical exercise and discovered a deeper appreciation for nature.

Transform your family with some of these quick and fun ideas:

  • Make a Birdfeeder- Make a bagel bird feeder yourself and hang it on a tree outside within view of where you eat breakfast. No bagel? Use a pinecone instead.
  • Make Mud Prints - Give your kids license for what you feel comfortable with: mud shoe prints, mud bike tire prints, mud handprints, no rules? Let your kids loose and have towels ready by the door for muddy shoes and clothes as soon as you are home.
  • Ships Ahoy! Sail Juice Box Boats in Puddles - After your kids finish their juice boxes, find a puddle and float them like boats.
  • Look for an Aerial Battle - At this time of year, the kids and I tend to notice small birds engaged in battle with a larger bird in the distance overhead. Keep watch on the sky; do you see a turf battle? A hawk hunting for newly hatched baby birds? What can you find?
  • Make Your Own Fossil - Take a small box, tape both sides and remove one side of the box. Fill the box with mud and press objects, such as shells, rocks, leaves, or sticks into the mud and bring the boxes inside to dry.
