The Geek Dad's Guide to Weekend Fun

About the Book
It’s Friday! (Ok, not quite, but you know you want it to be!) Jump in the car, rush home, throw your briefcase behind the couch, and get out your science goggles! It is time for THE GEEK DAD’S GUIDE TO WEEKEND FUN: Cool Hacks, Cutting-Edge Games, and More Awesome Projects for the Whole Family (Gotham Books Paperback Original, May 3, 2011, $18.00) by Ken Denmead.

Ken Denmead continues his widely successful Geek Dad series with a second book guaranteed to add some jolt in your weekend (more the electric kind than the soda kind). Last year, DIY projects made a comeback. We were wood-crafting and coloring book making. This year, we get serious. How about a game of Pun Wars? Or creating a stop-motion movie?

Some projects include:
  • A Nerf Dart Blowgun
  • Measuring the Speed of Light with Chocolate
  • Make Homemade Root Beer
  • Make Your Own Mini Me
  • 21st Century Super Hero Cape

Here is a video of Ken (from the last book): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT-X7f4EcIs
And here is Ken’s blog: http://wired.com/geekdad

For those unfamiliar with Geek Dad and his friends, the ingenuity began as a blog on WIRED.com and quickly grew into a sensation. Soon, it had a massive following and a New York Times bestselling book Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share. In Geek Dad, Ken shared some of his favorite and most fun projects with dads and kids everywhere. Now, he has gathered some of his friends and geeky cohorts to do the same in an all -new book. THE GEEK DAD’S GUIDE TO WEEKEND FUN includes some guest appearances by Chris Anderson, editor of WIRED, Patrick Norton of Techzilla, and Ken Jennings of Jeopardy.

So join the fun.
Break out the glue gun.
Let’s get this party started!

My Take on the Book
Another awesome book from the Geek Dad. I loved his first book and this one continues on the same note, but focuses on weekend fun, and not on projects that will take huge amounts of time. This book is full of fun activities, gadgets and the like that will make your weekend go from fun to awesome!

There were so many great ideas, I loved the idea of Dry Ice Ice Cream as well as Making Your Own Ray Gun. All of the activities were ones that were easy to follow and most did not require huge amounts of money or supplies (Which was great)!

All-in-all this is a one of a kind book that will make any dad look like a mechanical genius as well as pretty cool himself. If you like to tinker and make fun stuff that you and your kids will have a blast with, look no further than this book!

Book Review - Fifteen Minutes Outside

About the Book
Drawing inspiration from her own journey to get her family outside every day, Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids is a month-by-month collection of 365 easy and enjoyable ways to connect as a family and explore life outdoors.

Rebecca said her family not only became closer after the year end, but experienced great health benefits through fun physical exercise and discovered a deeper appreciation for nature.

Transform your family with some of these quick and fun ideas:

  • Make a Birdfeeder- Make a bagel bird feeder yourself and hang it on a tree outside within view of where you eat breakfast. No bagel? Use a pinecone instead.
  • Make Mud Prints - Give your kids license for what you feel comfortable with: mud shoe prints, mud bike tire prints, mud handprints, no rules? Let your kids loose and have towels ready by the door for muddy shoes and clothes as soon as you are home.
  • Ships Ahoy! Sail Juice Box Boats in Puddles - After your kids finish their juice boxes, find a puddle and float them like boats.
  • Look for an Aerial Battle - At this time of year, the kids and I tend to notice small birds engaged in battle with a larger bird in the distance overhead. Keep watch on the sky; do you see a turf battle? A hawk hunting for newly hatched baby birds? What can you find?
  • Make Your Own Fossil - Take a small box, tape both sides and remove one side of the box. Fill the box with mud and press objects, such as shells, rocks, leaves, or sticks into the mud and bring the boxes inside to dry.

My Take on the Book If you are looking for a book that will open your eyes and will encourage you and your family to get outside and engaged with one another, this is the book to do it! It is an inspiring book that will definitely make you think about what you are doing with your kids. Keep it close at hand for easy reference, as with as many ideas that it presents, you will never be at a loss for activities that will leave the whole family having fun together.

I commend the author for putting together such a great book, and would highly recommend it to all parents!

Film Synopsis:
As morning light breaks across the meadow, a young deer named Bambi is born and hailed as ‘Prince of the Forest.’ Soon Bambi emerges from the thicket on wobbly legs, much to the delight of his new friends, Thumper, the playful rabbit, and Flower, the bashful yet lovable skunk. But the fun of nibbling on fresh blossoms and frolicking through the woods is only the beginning. Exploring his new world, and guided by the wisdom of Friend Owl,Bambi learns valuable life lessons with every adventure – experiencing the power of friendship, family, and love along the away.

The Making of the Film:
BAMBI was Walt Disney’s fifth animated full-length feature film which released in 1942 during World War II and took approximately five years in the making due to the exquisite artwork and attention to detail of each and every scene, character and figure.  The artwork itself was created by some of the legendary “nine old men,” including Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis, Milt Kahl and Eric Larson and in order to achieve the film’s unprecedented level of realism, animators modeled anatomical studies using live animals (including a pair of fawns named Bambi and Faline) and imbued each with a uniquely endearing personality. Bambi’s delightful forest home received the same painstaking attention to detail, as background artists painted hundreds of landscapes based on extensive field research and nature photographs.

Walt Disney broke the longstanding animation tradition by casting child actors in the roles of Bambi’s young animals, including Bobby Stewart as Baby Bambi, Donnie Dunagan as Young Bambi, Hardie Albright as Adolescent Bambi and Peter Behn as Young Thumper. The cast also includes Sam Edwards as Adult Thumper, John Sutherland as Adult Bambi, Paula Winslowe as Bambi’s Mother and Sterling Holloway (the voice of Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book’s Kaa, the snake) as Adult Flower.
Film Accolades:
BAMBI was nominated for three Academy Awards® for Best Song (“Love Is a Song,”), Best Sound Recording, and Best Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. To date, BAMBI is No. 3 on the list of American Film Institute’s Top 10 Animated Films of All Times. And in 2004, the movie was commemorated with a first-class U.S. postage stamp and in the 1990’s the film inspired astronomers to name a pair of asteroids after the adorable characters – Thumper (April 20, 1993) and Bambi (October 17, 1995).

Book Review: Art With Anything

About the Book
With 52 weeks of fantastic art projects using easy-to-find, everyday materials, Art with Anything provides a year of creativity, imagination, and fun for children ages 4-10!
Organized alphabetically by material, each week features one everyday material (address labels, fabric scraps, leaves, rocks) and provides five days of unique activities, increasing in complexity with each day. Art with Anything uses materials like buttons, cardboard, hole-punch dots, junk mail, masking tape, sandpaper, and salt, which encourages recycling and reusing!

Children will love making “Glitter Photo Jars” or working on “Shake-It-Up-Bag Paintings,” and projects like “Family Finger Puppets” and “Fluff-N-Puff Mobiles” will keep them entertained for hours and stretch their imaginations.

Whether at home or at school, in child care or an after-school program, exploring the process of creating art is one of the most compelling ways children learn, and Art with Anything keeps children learning creatively all year long!

My Take on the Book
This book is an amazing collection of art activities that will simply amaze you! Not only is it filled with great activities, but it is filled with great activities that use materials that you can find anywhere.

One of the things that I liked about this book was that this book uses the idea that art is everywhere and can be made by anything. This idea opened my eyes and showed me that my kids can easily become budding artists without spending a ton of money.

One of the things that was nice was that the book shared numerous projects that could be done with numerous types of materials. You will find a plethors of different types of actiivities that are easy to attempt and easy to follow.

So if you are looking for a great book to use with kids, this one is the one to get. It is a great resource for parents, grandparents, babysitters or other caregivers. Check it out today!
