Book Review - God in the Obama Era

About the Book
Turn to this book for a careful contemporary exposition of Barack Obama’s religious beliefs -- and a long term historical appraisal of their relation to the faith of predecessor presidents.

The forty-fourth President’s term of office will not expire until two more years. So who are we living with? Is Barack Hussein Obama a man of Christian faith? His middle name (which he included when he took the oath of office) means blessing in Muslim tradition. Who have turned out to be his cohorts, his opponents, his enemies? Is he tolerant, intolerant, puffed up, confused?

The world must judge! Or is he perhaps (as charged) a paranoid, a racist, a devotee of Liberation Theology, a socialist, communist, Muslim or skeptic?

Historically, it seemed to be an open question of WHAT NEXT -- how long and who wins for his administration? In the 2010 mid-term national election Democrats suffered major losses as the House of Representatives passed into Republican control. Critics said that Barack Obama is already a one term president! What had become of his biblically referenced audacity of hope, they asked? The opposition leadership vowed to seek repeal of Obama Care, the President’s health care program. Who had the forty-fourth President of the United States turned out to be, friends and enemies speculated? Statesman, Hypocrite, Liar, Paranoid, Wise Leader, Prophet, Zealot?

To begin to answer our question one must consider how the first African-American President’s plans and policies related to those of his predecessors in office--Clinton, Kennedy, the Roosevelts, Lincoln, Jackson, Washington among others; how will future historians evaluate his personality and character? How is one to appraise his foreign policy, his priorities: war and peace, nuclear disarmament, medicare, recession, religious freedom? The fact is that some of his accomplishments have turned out to be substantial even though the high rate of unemployment throughout the land has hobbled his administration and destroyed much of his earlier popularity.

Barack Obama had campaigned for the presidency with great optimism and promise. He promised to end the log jam in Washington D.C., work for disarmament and peace abroad as well as to build racial cooperation and interparty cooperation at home. From the outset of his term in office the Republicans united against him, seeking to to bring him down and to block his program. Obama himself had come to the capitol pledged to foster cooperation across party divides. It did not work! Such was the continuing confrontation between a progressive idealistic Democratic President and his Republican traditionalist opponents. The country had its most intellectual president since Woodrow Wilson, but his careful judgments did not necessarily bring votes in the face of major unemployment. Of course, internationally the nation faced continuing warfare in the Middle East, now centered now in Afghanistan rather than Iraq.

My Take on the Book
I have not thought much about the religious affiliations of the Presidents in the past and how this affected their stances on many issues of the day. This book though gave the reader amazing insight into the lives and spiritual calling of our past Presidents and what that meant for them and for their overall US Policy decisions that they made while in office. While the book does not over all Presidents, it does take an intimate look at some of the best known of our US Presidents.

I have been reading the Biographies of our US Presidents and this book was an amazing addition that provided even more information than even some of the biographies that I have read this far.

We hear so much these days while listening to the news about the fundamentalist leaning of the US and their political power, so it was interested to see how in the past the Presidents balanced all of this.

This book was a great read and one that I could not put down. I am planning to share this book with another colleague who like me is reading the biographies of our Presidents as I know that he will love this as much as I. If you are interested in Presidential history, this book will open your eyes to things you would have never even considered in the past! read it today!

About the Author
Allyson Richards is 17 years old and a first-time author.  She started writing her first novel when she was 15.

In the summer of 2010, Allyson worked with Joey Travolta and wrote the script for his short film camp project, Friday Night After the Movies. She's attended a conference at the University of North Florida, where she worked with Kristin Harmel in her critique workshop for YA fiction writers.
She was then unexpectedly invited back to this conference next year on a scholarship, awarded to her by the conference director, Sharon Y. Cobb. Later, she was hired by Mrs. Cobb to critique a screenplay she had written.

Allyson lives on a horse farm in Jacksonville Florida. When she's not working on her novels, she is out riding her horse, Gravity.

"Whatever problem I ever face in life--whether it be boys, friends or even writer's block--I always find myself at peace with a pad of paper, a pen, and Gravity by my side."

My Take on the Book
I have to be honest and say that for such a young author I was completely amazed at the depth of her writing. I would not have known that she was a first time writer if I had not been pre-disposed the the knowledge beforehand. The author has done a great job at building a world for her characters through rich description and quality character development. The book was easy to read and made me want to continue reading from the first to the last page. If this book is any indication to books that may follow, I believe that this author has a long career ahead of her!

Book Review -This is just exactly like you

About the Book
When Jack Lang impulsively buys a second house directly across the street from his own, his wife Beth has finally had enough. She leaves him—and their six-year-old autistic son, Hendrick—to move in with Jack’s best friend, Terry Canavan. Jack tries to tell everyone in his life that he’s okay, but no one believes him: Not his employees at Patriot Mulch and Tree in suburban North Carolina, not Beth herself, and not Canavan’s estranged girlfriend, Rena, who arrives on Jack’s doorstep to see how, and whether, he’s bearing up.

The morning Hendrick, who rarely talks to anyone at all, suddenly starts speaking fluent Spanish, Jack knows they’re in uncharted territory. But as he lets Rena further into his life, even while he wonders whether Beth is ever coming home, he begins to suspect that the world is far more complicated than he’d ever believed.

Jack’s attempt to navigate this new landscape—one of defunct putt-putt courses and karaoke bars, parenthood and infidelity—is the subject of this wise, witty, and large-hearted debut novel. As the adults change houses, partners and perceptions, Hendrick emerges from his shell in ever more unexpected and delightful ways to become, at times, the story’s center of gravity. Perry’s fresh and funny insights into marriage, autism, suburban ennui, and life’s occasional miracles are certain to captivate readers.

My Take on the Book
What a fun read! This book was a bit strange at parts, even quirky, but it is definitely a book that was an easy read and one that I found myself plowing through. I read a lot, but still it can take me a little bit of time to get through the texts. What I found with this book though is that I wanted to read more and I wanted to find out what would happen next! The book is well written and portrays dysfunction in a very real way! In this book you get a bit of everything from marital upheaval to family ties you get to see and appreciate the complex web of relationships between the characters. The one thing I will say about this book is do not expect anything as there are turns where you least expect it!

Book Review - Annie Begins

About the Book
Annie Begins is the story of Annie Thompson, a brilliant business woman who doesn’t have the same success rate in relationships.  A whip-smart Harvard MBA, determined to set the emerging Internet world on fire and rise above her blue-collar beginnings, Annie is also a veritable sucker for charming, handsome men who want something from her.  So, when Annie’s ideal man announces his wife is divorcing him and designates Annie “the best listener he knows,” the sudden emotional intimacy and mixed signals are enough to disrupt Annie’s single-minded focus on work.

In pursuit of Mr. Tall, Dark, and Barely Available while juggling an intense work schedule, Annie is halted by a young cousin named April, newly diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, who makes finding a husband for Annie her dying project.  With the clear-eyed insight of a truly old soul, April handpicks a fiancĂ© for her cousin, but he’s most certainly not who Annie would have chosen.  Only with the help of an unlikely matchmaker does Annie realize the wisdom of the little girl’s choice, which challenges every assumption that had driven Annie so hard in the first place, and reveals what she most deeply values in a man—and in herself.

Annie Begins features a feisty, slightly underdog heroine you will find yourself routing for from page one. This novel is ultimately a story of transformation—of a young woman who is finally able to let the people in her life help her to discover the best version of herself, rather than blindly striving to be someone wholly different.

Michelle Toth writes with pin-point accuracy about the dot-com world of the mid-90’s from the perspective of someone who experienced it firsthand.

Using her business background, she is available to discuss the radical changes that we have seen in business with the advent of the internet and the ramifications from the bubble burst that taught us all a huge lesson in the journey towards control.

Toth teaches at Grub Street in Boston and is currently lecturing on the rocky road of self publishing as well as the changes in the current publishing model. She can weigh in on these topics as well as the changing face of business and what we can learn from the past.

My Take on the Book
This book was a fun and engaging read. From the first to last page you are drawn into Annie's world. The author has done a great job here developing the characters within the book and helping you truly feel the emotions, concerns and everyday life moments with the characters. The plot was strong and it kept me reading. There were many parts in the story where I found myself chuckling to myself. The author did that good of a job making the characters real to the reader.

This was a strong fast paced book that was a fun and enjoyable read, and I would highly recommend it to all!

Book Review - 60 Miles from Salt Water

About the Book
Set against the lush lawns of an eastern prep school and the chapel bells of a small New England college, "60 Miles from Salt Water" follows three young men into their individual adult lives as they enter the fast track worlds of money, high society, and international finance, much to their own peril.

Bob Lane wanted to be a money manager and investment banker for many years. A chance social meeting brings him together with Texas oil tycoon Rick Davis and his family, especially the beautiful Jane Davis, whose college days are spent near Bob's college in New England. Boston, New York, and Los Angeles are stops on the way to success as Bob now lives in idyllic and romantic Malibu.

Bob and his new friend Billy Andrews become inseparable during school and college. Over time, Billy becomes enamored with the legal profession, especially litigation, through summer jobs at a major New York law firm. He becomes a strong family man, with two sons, and climbs to the top of his profession.

Jim Bellino, son of a pizza shop owner outside Boston, is a powerful, charismatic, scholarship student whose dyslexia and a bad knee eventually add up to scholarship jeopardy. A senior Boston commercial banker and alumnus gives Jim a break, and Jim takes full advantage of his bank training program.

Years later, in their separate lives in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston respectively, we learn of the lust for their women, love of their families, and experiences in the crucible of life that brings them back together and redeems the jeopardy that has involved them all.

"60 Miles from Salt Water" is a tale of greed, passion, and Wall Street chicanery. A wild ride into the lives of the high rollers, from the exclusive clubs of Boston and Newport, to the beaches of Malibu and the mountains of tax sheltered Andorra, with sex, intrigue, and the FBI.

My Take on the Book
Talk about fast paced and crazy. This book takes the movie Wall Street to the next level! What I liked most about this book was the fact that the author knows his stuff and you can tell it on every page of this short novel. With that being said you definitely are taken for a ride in this book, and you will definitely not be bored. I can say from the beginning to the end, you are taking on a ride through friendship, love, money and greed. What could be better!

Book Review - A Dog Named Slugger

About the Book
The book, A Dog Named Slugger by Leigh Brill, is a true story about a woman who, at the height of her Cerebral Palsy symptoms, turned to a service dog organization where she was matched with Slugger, a highly intelligent, devoted and loving Yellow Labrador.  The story that follows is not just heart-warming and inspiring,  it also promotes a very worthy cause--the Service Dog Industry.  (All of Leigh’s proceeds from the book will go to the nonprofit St. Francis Service Dogs organization)

Lovable Labrador Gives Palsy Patient New Lease on Life

"I have cerebral palsy. I walk funny and my balance is bad. I fall a lot. My hands shake, too. That means I'm not so good at carrying things. And if I drop stuff, sometimes it's hard to just bend down and get it." I waited anxiously for the interviewer's response. She smiled. "It sounds like a service dog could be great for you."

So began Leigh Brill's journey toward independence and confidence, all thanks to a trained companion dog named Slugger. The struggling college student and the Labrador with "a coat like sunshine" and a tail that never stopped wagging became an instant team. Together, they transformed a challenge into a triumph, eventually inspiring and educating all whom they met.

Leigh Brill tells the heart-warming story of her life and lovable Yellow Lab in her best-selling memoir, A Dog Named Slugger (ISBN:  978-0-98432565-8)   The story begins near the end of Brill’s college years, when her Cerebral Palsy symptoms worsened and, in desperation, she turned to service dogs; canines trained to aid people with disabilities.  Leigh was instantly matched with big, lovable Slugger, who would not only pick up dropped pens and open heavy doors, but would pick up Brill’s life and open her mind and heart, helping her to find peace, love and even a career.

The book is written in a fun, easy-to-read style, with Slugger himself leaving the most indelible mark as an unforgettable character.  More than just a memoir, A Dog Named Slugger shines a light on the growing Service Dog movement, hopefully leading to more trainers, helper dogs and triumphant “Slugger stories” throughout the country and the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leigh Brill is a writer, speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities.  She is actively involved in organizations promoting the work of service dogs.   (www.LeighBrill.com)

My Take on the BookThis story was heartwarming. I have seen these amazing dogs in action in the past and was happy to have read the story if this amazing dog. If you love animals or wrk with them this book is one that you will want for your collection!

What I loved about this story was the fact that the author does an amazing job to truly show the reader the love between dog and owner. You will be inspired and motivated and you will leave the reading of this story with a better appreciation for the work that these dogs do as well as the importance of continuing the training of dogs like Slugger into the future.

Outside of the story of the dog, it is also the story of its owner also and the amazing journey that she went through to lead her to Slugger.

As mentioned this story will touch your heart and will make you want to do more to know the people around you.

Book Review - The Medium Next Door

About the Book
At just five years old, Maureen Hancock discovered her ability to communicate with the dead. Descended from a long line of legendary Irish mystics, she was no stranger to the spiritual realm, but for fear of being misunderstood by her friends and family she kept the otherworldly messages to herself, eventually suppressing them completely.

Maureen wouldn't hear the spirits again until she was in a near-fatal car crash. Soon after, she had hundreds of voices in her head, many of which helped her crack cases and expose fraud in her role as a litigation paralegal at a large Boston law firm. Then, when tragedy struck on 9/11, Maureen was bombarded with messages from the spirit world. As each one made contact with her, she finally came to terms with her calling: to communicate with the deceased, assist the dying, search for missing children, and teach the living about life after death, all the while raising her children in her suburban home.

Maureen Hancock is literally is the Medium Next Door, and in this book and through her stories of her encounters with the otherworld as well as guided exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, she offers the same comfort and wisdom she shares in her healing encounters and lectures about what is out there waiting for all who are open to its mysteries.

My Take on the Book
If you have ever had any interest in looking at what a medium's life is really like, then this book will provide you a glimpse. I was amazed at the different experiences that the author shares with her readers. I used to watch the show Medium with my wife until it ended this year and though I knew that some of it was based on the life of a real medium, I also knew that it was still television and that it was embellished a bit as well. This book did not seem to be embellished at all. Instead it seemed to provide the read with full access to the author's experiences and life. I would say that whether you believe in spirits or not, this book will definitely make you think and consider the possibilities of the world around you (which is the mark of a great book in my perspective). So if you are looking for a book that will open your eyes, look no further than this book!

Book Review - The Moral Lives of Animals

About the Book
Wild elephants walking along a trail stop and spontaneously try to protect and assist a weak and dying fellow elephant. Lab rats, finding other rats caged nearby in distressing circumstances, proceed to rescue them. A chimpanzee in a zoo loses his own life trying to save an unrelated infant who has fallen into a watery moat.  These scenes (actually observed) are often dismissed as odd happenstance after a moment of mild astonishment or simple amusement.  But could there be more?

For centuries, we humans have viewed ourselves as the sole possessors of moral sense.  However, in his new book, The Moral Lives of Animals, critically-acclaimed author Dale Peterson, Ph.D shows that morality in non-human animals not only exists, but can be—and is—a complex system of inclinations and inhibitions, much like our own.

Using evolutionary theory and examples from the scientific studies of a wide variety of animals—from dogs to dolphins, apes to elephants, rats to lizards—Peterson shows how much animal behavior follows principles embodied in humanity’s most treasured moral codes, from the Ten Commandments to the New Testament.  By showing that animals have powerful, inherent impulses toward such behaviors as cooperation, generosity, complex decision-making and fairness, animals show that morality can be a completely rational function.

The Moral Lives of Animals is a seminal thought piece, an intellectually satisfying piece of writing that raises important questions.  By simultaneously challenging the bedrock of human wisdom, and promoting understanding and humane treatment toward other creatures, Moral Lives is destined to change the way we think and treat our environment and its inhabitants.

About the Author

Dale Peterson Ph.D. is a lecturer in English at Tufts University.  He is a prolific writer of science and natural history, but found his passion in Animals after several scientific books.  He was introduced to Primatology by Jane Goodall, and traveled the world to study and document living creatures.

Peterson has produced several bestselling works, including Eating Apes, The Deluge and the Ark: A Journey into Primate Worlds, and bestselling biography Jane Goodall: The Woman Who Redefined Man; a New York Times Book Review Notable Book and Boston Globe Best Book of 2006.

His other publications include Visions of Caliban (with Jane Goodall), and Demonic Males (with Richard Wrangham). Peterson lectures in English at Tufts University.

My Take on the Book
Have you ever read Moby Dick? If you haven't you have missed out on an amazing novel. This book, though written many years after Mody Dick, has used Moby Dick as the underlying framework for how he examines animal behavior.

What was amazing was the analogy that the author made to the way that Melville examined the whale and his "malevolence" toward humans. Seeing that I had read Moby Dick in the past I would not have thought about this correlation. The author goes beyond this fictional analogy and brings in many real life examples that show how complex their behaviors really are. While I am not a Zoologist, I could appreciate the arguments that the author shared and was completely interested in seeing how he would pull all of these thoughts together in the end. I have to say that in the end I was satisfied at how he did pull it all together.

You will be amazed at this book and completely educated in many areas that you probably would never have thought of. So no matter whether you are a Zoologist, Vet, or an average Joe, this book will open your eyes to the world around you!

Book Review - The Megasaurus

About the Book
What's the King of Beandom to do? The tiny, multi-colored bean-shaped bears of Beandom are under attack by a monster. Even the King's wisest advisors seem unable find a solution. Who will save Beandom? Can an ordinary tiny bear step forward with a plan that works? Welcome to Beandom! It's a great place to visit. Or, it will be just as soon as we get rid of that pesky monster! The message of the story is: Follow your convictions even when others think differently. In the series entitled The Lima Bear Stories, as the basic characters appear and reappear, each has a distinct personality that shines through in every story. While the children have no idea what twists and turns the story may take, they come to know the characters and have a pretty good idea of how they are likely to act in different situations and settings. In essence, the children become friends with the characters. There is a form of bonding that develops. Each story carries an important overriding message (such as courage, tolerance, honesty), and we believe that this bonding creates a more profound understanding and appreciation of the message.

About the AuthorThomas Weck is a creative and captivating national award-winning author of children's books. He has traveled extensively in the United States and in foreign countries including teaching children through the Peace Corps. With four children of his own and a passion for observing children's behavior, he has distilled these observations into stories that excite the imagination of young minds amidst peals of laughter and learning. Peter Weck grew up enjoying the wonderful stories his father told about Lima Bear and his friends. Now that he is the father of three young girls, he has teamed up with his father to capture these and other stories in print. Peter's goal is to help children foster a love for creating, reading, and listening to stories. He currently serves on the board of the Menlo Park Library Foundation and is CEO of StoryJumper, a web-based company that enables anyone to create and illustrate children's stories.

My Take on the Book
We love to read and this book is a fun and engaging read! This story is light and a bit silly, but what kids' story that is loved by children isn't. I know that my girls loved the story. The simply sat there and listed over from the beginning to the end (They didn't flinch).

I liked the fact that the authors thought of some additional learning opportunities that a parent can do with their child as they read through the book. You don;t always get this and instead you have to come up with these by yourself.... but not with this book.

Overall, this book was great and is one that I believe all kids will not only love, but also will add to their learning greatly! If you have yet to read it, please read it soon, you won't be sorry!

Book Review - Patti Pelican and The Gulf Oil Spill

About the Book
Louisiana author and storyteller Lynda Deniger has published Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill, a very special and beautifully illustrated children’s book that focuses on teaching and inspiring children to respect and appreciate the environment .

In this thoughtfully written children’s book, Patti the Pelican and Sammy the Seagull share what happens to them along the shores of Louisiana following the Gulf Oil Spill.

When the oil slick comes ashore, Patti Pelican and Sammy Seagull find themselves in trouble.  With their feathers covered in oil, they are at risk. Their firsthand experience reveals the environmental impact of the dark oily mess that hit the shores and ruined their beautiful habitat.

Patti and Sammy find themselves trapped. What now?

Will they be rescued and taken to a place of safety? Will they ever be able to return to their home?

Child-friendly illustrations assist children in understanding the serious nature of the terrible disaster in an uplifting, educational way. Conveyed as well is the rapid response, and the strength and commitment of the people and organizations who rushed to aid those affected in the communities along the Gulf of Mexico.

This bitter-sweet tale recounts the events and responses of the people who came to help save the animals impacted by the spill. Deniger captures the heart of the personal efforts and achievements of those who sought to protect the wildlife and help in the area’s recovery after the spill. Her story tells how friends can help others in time of need when they work together toward a common worthy goal.

About the Author

This is the second book in the Salty Seas Series by Lynda Wurster Deniger of Abita Springs, La.  The former journalist used  her research and fact-gathering skills in presenting this factual account of the events of the oil spill from a bird’s perspective.

Performing for audiences since she was three, Lynda Deniger literally dresses the part of a real life shrimper as she takes children on a fun-filled adventure when she acts out the story of Salty Seas and His Heroic Friends.

About the Illustrator

The colorful illustrations, true to the areas of the Gulf and Louisiana, done by Denham Springs artist Paulette Ferguson make this book a memorable, quality reading and learning experience She was named “Artist of the Year, 2006” by the Arts Council of Livingston Parish and the Denham Springs Fine Art Association.

My Take on the BookThough I am from the north I was wrapped by the stories of destruction that occurred with the recent gulf oil spill. This book makes this story of the oi spill come alive for children and allows them to understand the impact of the spill itself. This book particularly looks at the bird rescue efforts that occurred after the spill..

The characters within the book are fun and engaging, and when I read the story to my girls, they simply loved them. The plot of the story was also light and flowed well. Though I had not read anything from the author in the past, I have to say that I was impressed, as she weaves an intricate tapestry for children that pulls them in leavin them wanting even more.

The artwork in this book was simply beautiful and does a lot to encourage kids to do more for their environment.

Overall, this book was great and is definitely one that I would highly recommend.

Book Review - Beyond Talent

About the Book
New York Times best-selling author John C. Maxwell shows that talent is just the starting point for a successful impact in any organization. It's what takes you beyond your talent that matters.

People everywhere are proving him right. Read the headlines, watch the highlights, or just step out your front door: Some talented people reach their full potential, while others self-destruct or remain trapped in mediocrity. What makes the difference? Maxwell, the go-to guru for business professionals across the globe, insists that the choices people make--not merely the skills they inherit--propel them to greatness. Among other truths, successful people know that:
  • Belief lifts your talent.
  • Initiative activates your talent.
  • Focus directs your talent.
  • Preparation positions your talent.
  • Practice sharpens your talent.
  • Perseverance sustains your talent.
  • Character protects your talent. . . . and more!
It's what you add to your talent that makes the greatest difference. With authentic examples and time-tested wisdom, Maxwell shares thirteen attributes you need to maximize your potential and live the life of your dreams.

You can have talent alone and fall short of your potential. Or you can go beyond talent and really stand out.

My Take on the Book
Another amazing book by John Maxwell. As a person who has read a number of Maxwell's books I am always looking for new books that he put out as they are always down to earth and practical. This book lives up to the standard that he set in many of his books that came before.

What I liked about this book was that it was so practical and Maxwell does a great job at setting a path in front of the reader to follow to make sure that they can work on maximizing the talents that they have.

The book also shares a ton of examples that make the book even more user friendly. I also loved that the book's examples were real people that used their own initiative and self determination along with other things to turn their talents into something bigger and better.

Maxwell's writes in such a way that is completely encouraging and filled with great advice that moves the reader forward.

This is a great book that is one that will change your life if you let it!

Book Review - The Survivors

About the Book
The Survivors is the first installment of five tantalizing tales of the fourteen ill-fated Survivors and their descendants, who have been content in hiding for over three centuries. Isolated on a Montana mountainside, only Sadie, the rogue daughter, dares to abandon the family’s sacred hiding place. But no matter how far Sadie runs, something always pulls her back.
On a muggy summer night in Tennessee, she witnesses a shocking scene that will change her life forever. It is the first in a sequence of events that will drag her from the human world she’s sought to belong to for over a century and send her back to her Puritanical family and into an uncertain future filled with cunning witches, mysterious nosferatu shape-shifters, dangerous eretica and vieczy vampires, millennia-old mythology, and the search for her own mortality.

Breakout young adult fiction author Amanda Havard, who just released her auspicious debut novel The Survivors (Chafie Press), has teamed up with artist-to-watch/internet sensation Chris Mann to record an emotionally charged, original song based on her book. Co-written by Havard and Deanna Walker, “Pretty Girl” was recorded in Nashville and features vocals from Mann, one of the principle voices in Fox’s hit show Glee (Warbler #6). Mann has also been featured in numerous film and TV shows including Avatar, Letters to Juliet, Sex and City 2, 2012 and many more.
Inspired by lead character Sadie Matthau, “Pretty Girl” takes the literary experience to another level by helping set the musical tone displayed throughout the book. It’s one of many songs featured on the “soundtrack” for The Survivors, which also includes everyone from Coldplay and Nick Drake to Ingrid Michaelson and Old Crow Medicine Show.

My Take on the Book
Over the years I have read a number of books dealing with the supernatural. This book I knew would follow in a similar vein, but seeing that this was a new author, I did not know what to expect. Once I got into this book I was surprised to find that the book itself took a unique view of the supernatural. I loved the fact that the author takes old stories and myth and weaves them into the tapestry which is her book.

I found that Havard does a great job at engaging her reader and has built a strong base of characters through which she can continue this series. Through the subtle intricacies of her writing you are drawn into the book and into the immortal life of Sadie. I was impressed at how well the author pulls the reader into the story and allows the reader to sympathize and relate to a character who has lived a truly supernatural life.

The book is full of action and relationship tension, and at the end you are definitely left out on a ledge awaiting the next book in the series.

For a first book, this author has definitely started on a positive note, and I for one am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Book Review - 8 Crucial Realities

About the Book
With a foreword by Governor Mike Huckabee, 8 Crucial Realities: Successful Choices for Graduates will help graduates to succeed in their daily life. While most graduation gift books are a compilation of inspirational quotes, 8 Crucial Realities offers an in depth look at eight areas that have a major impact on the graduates future successes or failures. The book debunks some popular beliefs in our culture and replaces them with God’s perspective and wisdom.

In 8 Crucial Realities graduates will gain understanding about the power of their daily choices in eight areas: Personalities, God’s will, relationships, authority, money, lifestyle, honesty, and spiritual principles.  Choices are based on our beliefs, and when our beliefs are incorrect, poor choices will follow leading to “soul toll.” 8 Crucial Realities offers practical steps to help graduates make choices that will create a fulfilling successful life today, and in so doing, establish lasting patterns and habits that will bring graduates continued success throughout life.

Each of the eight sections starts with multiple choice stories and a true/false quiz. This will help individuals to begin thinking about the issues in that section. At the end of each section there is an overview including a summary and discussion/reflection questions with opportunity for self-discovery and growth.
8 Crucial Realities makes a perfect graduation gift or a stimulating small group study.

My Take on the Book
With a strong spiritual undertone and tons of practical application, this book truly is a great gift for a graduate that you know. The author has done a remarkable job at sharing spirituality and reality for our youth. She lays it out with straight talk and yet a warm heart, allowing the reader to know that she does care and that she does want every person reading this book to succeed. I loved that in one of the chapters the author ties in Myers Briggs personality indicators. We use these quite a bit with the students that I work with on a daily basis and they do say a lot about who you are as a person and how you process and interact with the people around you.

All-in-all, this book is a great book, that allows graduates to see that there is hope in the future, and with God by their side they will succeed.
