Book Review - Polish Classic Recipes

About the Book
Hospitality and hearty food are the hallmarks of the Polish dining experience. This classic and concise cookbook features dozens of favorite Polish dishes showcasing a variety of flavors, preparation techniques, and ingredient selections. With titles given in both Polish and English, recipes range from cucumber salad and beet soup to pork cutlets and potato pancakes. A chapter devoted to pierogi presents the dumplings with an assortment of fillings, and the final chapter of sweets tops off any meal in true Polish fashion. Like all the books in Pelican's Classic Recipe Series, the entries in this collection were carefully selected to provide a cross section of memorable and authentic dishes. Organized by course, the offerings range from appetizers and salads to sides and sweets, featuring the most iconic and national of dishes--Hunter's Stew and Barszcz--alongside simple comfort food and a handful of desserts, including honey cake, poppy seed rolls, and chocolate mazurka.

Designed for the modern kitchen yet retaining traditional roots, each heritage recipe has been tested to perfection. Accompanied by notes on Polish holiday customs, history, and menu pairing suggestions, these dishes offer a flavorful sample of the Polish dining experience, as passed down from generation to generation.

My Take on the Book
My wife is half polish and she enjoys sharing her family's culture and food with our family as she can. One of our favorite family meals are pierogi's. When I was asked to check out this book I knew that she would be excited to try out some of the recipes. When she went through the book I was not disappointed. Her eyes lit up and she was immediately drawn to some of the recipes she remembered her Grandmother making. She was very excited to see Angel Wing Crisps as they were one of her favorite memories of her Grandmother growing up. She immediately wanted to try them out, and let me tell you... though they are not healthy, they are delicious.

So if you are polish, or simply love polish food, this book has a great variety of traditional recipes that are easy to make and delicious, check this book out today!

Book Review: Houston Classic Mexican Recipes

About the Book
This delicious offering of Mexican dishes from Houston’s famous and favorite restaurants presents dozens of classic and contemporary recipes side by side, enticing the home cook to bring the unique flavors of Houston’s Mexican cuisine to the table. The traditional flavors of fresh lime, cilantro, fiery peppers, and creamy queso infuse the dishes with authentic Mexican flavor while the signature local touches mark each recipe as unmistakably Houstonian. Real Guacamole from Yelapa, Poblano Mole Enchiladas from La Guadalupana, Carnitas from Santos, and Dos Leches y Canela Flan from Rebecca Masson are among the book’s showcase selections.

A festive follow-up to Erin Hicks Miller’s Houston Classic Desserts, this volume includes recipes for any occasion, from soups, salads, and snacks to enchiladas, entrees, sides, drinks, and desserts. Featuring a wide variety of dishes and methods of preparation, the book spans the flavor spectrum, including such fare as Hugo’s rich Taquitos de Langosta, Haven’s Pork Belly al Pastor Torta, and 1308 Cantina’s cooling Mango Jicama Salad.

Vibrant photography, engaging anecdotes about each establishment, and an elegant, easy-to-follow format make this spicy addition to Pelican’s Classic Recipes Series a surefire celebration of Houston’s classic Mexican flavors.

My Take on the Book
While I am not Mexican in ethnicity, my wife and I love the food of Mexico. This book made my mouth water just looking though the book itself. This book tends to be a mix of Tex-Mex, and not simply Mexican   countries. Being from an area with a lack of quality Mexican restaurants, it was nice to get some new ideas about possible recipes that I could make in the home.

There were so many recipes that surrounded the book that I did not know where to start. All of the recipes were from popular restaurants and thus from soups to entrĂ©es, you could see from the amazing photos that these recipes would be something amazing!

I tried out a few of the recipes and they were as good as I would have guessed! If you are passionate about your Mexican food and love to vook. Look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed!

Book Review: Scandinavian Classic Baking

About the BookDistinguished by hints of cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange peel, these sweet yeast breads, berry-studded tarts, and nutty pastries offer the most memorable flavors of Scandinavian cuisine. Gorgeously photographed, the authentic recipes range from hearty and wholesome Scandinavian Rye Bread, Swedish Lucia Buns, and Mini Princess Cakes to the traditional and venturesome Danish Aebleskiver, Norwegian Fattigmann, and Sandbakkels.
The book, organized by type of dish, includes information about each of the countries that make up Scandinavia along with anecdotes and notes about traditions, holidays, and baking tips and tricks. Featuring photographs from around the region and information on where to find the equipment for specialty baking endeavors, this cookbook invites bakers of all levels to experience Northern Europe’s best coffee breads, cakes, cookies, and tarts.

My Take on the Book
As a Swedish American, I have to say that though I have this blood flowing through my veins, I never really grew up with this type of food in my home. Though this was the case, I was always interested in trying recipes, but I had yet to try them in the past. Thus, when I was asked to try out this recipe book, I knew that it was definitely one that I wanted to try for myself.

This book does a great job of sharing some of the delicacies that the Scandinavian countries are known for such as the pastries and other bakery items. I found the recipes to be easy to follow and not to intricate that I was messing up the ones that I tried. To this point I have tried only a couple of recipes and I have to say that they are thus far very succulent, and I know though that if I am not careful, I will be putting on some extra pounds from these extra baked goods.

So if you love pastry and baking, try some ethic baking and learn form the best!
