“I like a very strong female character. Something different, something edgier, something challenging and, basically, something that moves me. I just imagine myself being an audience member and thinking, What would I get out of this?”

Hey, that's a pretty damn good sound bite for an actress. Makes us inclined to like her. We are mostly disappointed with the Mildred Pierce mini on HBO (and we'll likely outline why when it wraps up, but suffice it to say you can't meticulously reconstruct a 1940s woman-shaming melodrama in 2011), but we're hanging on to the end, mostly because we're waiting to see her enter the story. There's been a listlessness to the production up till now and we're waiting to see some Veda fireworks.

As for the pics...

She's tailor-made for these sultry, half-Hollywood and half-burlesque looks, especially in light of her role in Mildred Pierce. That Vionnet dress isn't going to look good on practically everyone, but it looks amazing here. Of course, she only has to stand still in it. We imagine it's a tougher dress to pull off if there's walking and moving involved. It's not the most scintillating editorial we've ever seen, but she's well-styled, the looks suit her, and unlike most actresses in this situation, she's not giving a toothy actress smile and looking directly into the camera in the majority of the shots. That's a win as far as we're concerned.
