Book Review - Rationalist Spirituality

About the Book
One question that has been addressed by religions since time began and has never been fully answered is “Why does the universe exist and what are you supposed to do in it?”  Popular answers often fail to account for obvious aspects of reality.  Let’s face it, if God knows everything, why do we need to learn through pain and suffering?  If the universe is fundamentally good, why are we besieged by wars, crime and injustice?

In modern society, answers from orthodox science take the rational high ground and tackle these contradictions by denying the need for, and existence of, meaning.  We tend to implicitly accept the idea that rationality somehow contradicts spirituality.  This is not only an insidious belief – it simply is not true!
In Rationalist Spirituality: An exploration of the meaning of life and existence informed by logic and science (O-Books), Kastrup constructs an articulate and logical argument for the meaning of existence, informed by science itself.   He gets straight from A to B without any detours or unnecessary ‘fluff’ in between!

Using a framework to explain that all aspects of human existence have a logical, coherent reason and role, including the ones often perceived as negative, the powerful logic used by the author inevitably leads to insightful and inspiring guidelines for living a purposeful and meaningful life.

Many modern authors tend to take the rational high-ground against spiritual philosophies, and both sides tend to assume that a debate on atheism versus spirituality is really a debate on reason versus faith.  However, Kastrup takes the stand that a sound and rich form of spirituality can be grounded on reason as well.  Cutting through all the hype, the author has written a logical, coherent and scientifically-consistent articulation of spirituality.

Rationalist Spirituality is a book that both sides of the debate can appreciate; educated professionals who are rational but also eager to find a way to bring spirituality into the context of their lives, religious people who are looking for a tool to enter into dialogue with skeptical rationalists, as well as those disenchanted with religious discourse because of its apparent lack of rational backing, but who still crave meaning and spiritual consolation.   In Rationalist Spirituality, Kastrup does a superb job of providing guidelines for living a ‘purpose-driven life’ from the viewpoint of coherent logic and science.

Bernardo Kastrup has a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and has worked as a scientist in some of the world’s foremost research laboratories.  He has been an entrepreneur and founder of two high-tech businesses, and is currently an executive in one of the world’s most influential technology companies.  Please visit the author’s website at: http://www.bernardokastrup.com.

My Take on the Book
This book provides straight to-the-point step by step analysis to the subject. The way he writes is engaging and interactive and keeps the reader on their edge of their seats. At the same time, the book makes you think deeply about the subject, much more than most books these days.

Though the book is small, it provides such a rational argument to the idea of metaphysical speculation. You may ask, what the heck is this, and I know that I did as well... but I tell you, this book is such an easy read and by the end you at least feel like an expert on the field.

I will warn you that you d have to really take your time with the text as it will make you think (in a good way).

Overall, this book was great and one that I would recommend to any and all!

CD Review - Rebecca St. James: I Will Praise You

About the CD
Rebecca St. James charts yet another new course with I Will Praise You, a new collection of worship songs she terms “ her most personal recording to date.” From the opening notes of track one, listeners are offered a welcoming connection with Rebecca’s recognizably authentic vocal warmth and delivery.

More than anything, I Will Praise You represents the latest steps in Rebecca’s life long journey towards the presence of God.

My Take on the CD
I have been a fan of Rebecca St. James for some time so I was excited to get her new album, I Will Praise You, to review. This CD was amazing and uplifting as most of the CD's that Rebecca has had in the past. Some of the songs were ones that I had heard others sing in the past, but as is true of the artist in the past, even if she is covering a song, she still brings her own flair to the song itself.

Rebecca St. James' voice is clear and full of passion, which is one of the main reasons that I have continued to follow her music.

After listening once to this CD, I know that it will definitely be one that you will continue to find in my CD player as I listen to it over and over. The reason that I say this is that I am amazed to find that each time I listen to the song I feel renewed, and this is not something I can say of all CD's that I own!

A Great CD and one that I would highly recommend.

Book Review - Soul Proof

About the Book
For thousands of years, spiritual masters taught that the soul survives physical death.  The suffering masses just needed to have faith that was true.

After working with many dying patients in hospitals, Mark saw that faith often wasn’t enough.  He felt called to search for factual answers to life’s thought-provoking questions: ‘Where did I come from?  Why am I here?  What happens after I die?  Is there a God and, if so, why is there so much suffering?  And, perhaps most importantly, how can I best live and treat myself and others during my time on earth?’

Thirty-five years later, Dr. Pitstick shares a vast and varied amount of evidence—clinical, scientific, religious/spiritual and first-hand in nature—including research from many renowned doctors, scientists and scholars. This collective data clearly shows that life is a totally safe and magnificent adventure amidst eternity.  His Soul Proof book and documentary film provide compelling evidence and heart-warming reassurance that you and everyone else are wise, infinite, special and powerful beings of energy.

You can live more fully and vibrantly in this all-too-often seemingly senseless world when you really know that your real self doesn’t die, cannot be hurt and cannot ultimately fail.  Just a glimpse of this spiritual viewpoint instills much hope, peace and empowerment—no matter what is going on around you.

Dr. Pitstick provides comforting evidence-based answers to commonly asked questions about heaven, hell, God, sin, reincarnation, miracles, suicide, the paranormal and other fascinating subjects.  With only 19% of Americans regularly attending church, many people are seeking other sources for sensible answers to these vastly important topics.

After working with many thousands of patients, Mark realized that it’s difficult to know and show that you are an eternal soul if you are tired, depressed, in pain or stressed.  Seeing the limitations and dangers of prescription drugs and surgery, Mark searched for the most powerful, natural ways that people can feel happy, healthy and energetic.  His book Radiant Wellness explains seven keys to feeling, looking and being your very best.

Life is full of trials and tribulations, but handling those daily challenges with style is quite possible when you remember who you are and optimally care for your body and mind—the temple of your soul.  Having a greater perspective even allows you to view life’s difficulties as exquisite opportunities for service to others and personal growth.

With the knowledge from Soul Proof and Radiant Wellness—in addition to your personal faith—your spirit can shine through in every situation.  That’s when life becomes an exciting adventure, even through the sad and bad times, a progressive journey toward the grand life you have imagined.

Dr. Pitstick’s impressive background includes a pre-medical degree, graduate theology studies, a master’s in clinical psychology, and a doctorate in chiropractic health care.  He has been a review editor and regular contributor to many magazines.  Mark has hosted a nationally syndicated radio show and presented many nationwide workshops about spiritual awareness and optimal wellness.  For more information about Dr. Pitstick and his outreaches, visit his websites at www.soulproof.com and www.radiant101.com.

My Take on the Book
This was a profound book that makes you think and ponder the many concepts that the author shares. The book goes so deep into spirituality and beyond, it is a lot to take in. I found myself re-reading a few a the passages, not because I did not understand, but instead because I wanted to understand more and better.

This book is proof positive that our birth is not the beginning and our death is not the end, and it makes everyone, believers and non-believers stop and ponder some of the scientific and non-scientific proof that there is something else to consider.

This book has a ton in it and is one that will make you think, ponder and re-evaluate your own thoughts and beliefs. Check it out today!

Book Review - Time With God for Fathers

About the Book
A Scripture-led devotion to encourage time between fathers and the Lord.

Time with God for Fathers contains ninety devotions that encourage fathers to spend time on their relationship with the Lord in prayer, thanksgiving, and praise. Devotions are topical and include: forgiveness, wisdom, comfort, guidance, and strength. A Quick Scripture Reference Guide is included to help fathers in their day-to-day walk with God and fatherhood. Subjects consist of "Father's Prayers", "God's Promises for Fathers", "God's Blessings for Fathers", "Responsibilities for Fathers", and "God's Dynamic Examples of Fathers".

My Take on the Book
Time with God for Fathers is a short but powerful book that is written as a devotional and offers insights for fathers into developing a relationship with God, as well as his family and children. What I liked about the book was the fact that each devotional (there were 90 of them) made you truly think deeply about your day and about your true beliefs.

This book is definitely a great gift for any father who is trying to grow in his faith! I can see myself using this over and over, as I truly did grow in my own reading and interaction with the text and devotionals within.

Book Review: Heaven Revealed

About the Book
There are so many questions in life...but few are as universal as:  "What is the afterlife like?"  For those who have put their hope in Jesus Christ here on earth--Heaven awaits.  Addressing questions as basic as What will we do there? and What is it like?, theologian Dr. Paul Enns dives deep into the Scriptures while reflecting on the very personal nature of what is to come.  Heaven Revealed is concurrently a helpful, easy-to-read guidebook for Christians as well as an encouragement for those of us who are left here on earth after our loved ones who are Christians pass away.  Follow along as Dr. Enns succinctly leads you through what the Bible has to say about heaven.

In grief, we all need hope--hope for our loved ones who are now gone, and hope for ourselves as eternity looms closer. Heaven should be something to look forward to, not something to be confused about.

About the Author

PAUL P. ENNS (B.R.E., Winnipeg Bible College; Th.M., Th.D., Dallas Theological Seminary) ministers at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida and serves as a professor and the director of the Tampa Extension, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Enns has also taught at Northwestern College in Minneapolis, and at both Dallas and Talbot Theological Seminaries. He is the author of The Moody Handbook of Theology and Approaching God. Dr. Enns, who was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen, has two sons.

My Take on the BookI have always been a church goer, but not always a strong bible reader. In reading this book, I found that I had a lot to learn when it came to knowing Heaven! This book does a great job at making you think and consider Heaven for what it is and for the mystery that surrounds it.

The author had great reasons for wanting to know what Heaven was after his wife passed away. This person need to know Heaven, and God better allowed him to better appreciate and understand the place in which his wife had gone.

I liked the fact that the author did a great job at explaining the biblical underpinnings of the story itself and expands on that on how we connect into Heaven both Biblically and spiritually. The references throughout the book to the Bible were easy to follow and I found that I could easily go and read through the passages and gather an even deeper understanding to the passages itself.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking to better understand what Heaven is both spiritually and biblically.

Book Review - A Simple Blessing

About the Book
Something wonderful and life-changing has been happening at Michael W. Smith's concerts. Recently he began closing the evening with a simple prayer of blessing woven from Scripture. The response has been overwhelming. The emails and letters of testimony are like nothing he has ever experienced in his 25 years of ministry. Far from being a 'magical' formula for extracting wealth and possessions from God, he has discovered that God's blessings are measured more by the flourishing of character in adversity than by the flourishing of stuff. The amazing result of God's true blessing is overflowing joy and peace. Unfortunately, many are robbed of the promise of blessing because they seek to be blessed more than to bless others. This beautiful work, written with writer Thomas Williams, will inspire readers to examine their hearts and learn to experience God's blessing as they seek to bless others, thus discovering the secret to drawing near to the heart of God.

About the Author

Michael W. Smith is a successful recording artist who has recorded more than 25 albums and had numerous hit radio songs in the Christian and General markets. He's won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards and is the founder of Rocketown, an outreach to teenagers in a 38,000 square-foot facility in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. He is involved in mission work around the world. He has also written several best-selling books, including Old Enough To Know and Friends Are Friends Forever. He and his wife Debbie have five children and live in Nashville.

Thomas Williams has written 14 books, both fiction and nonfiction, including three with Josh McDowell. He has ghostwritten another dozen books for several popular authors. Formerly the executive art director for Word Publishing, Tom has designed or illustrated more than 2,000 book covers and now serves as a creative consultant to several publishers. He and his wife, Faye, have three married daughters and eight grandchildren. They live in Granbury, Texas near Fort Worth.

My Take on the BookThis short book packs a punch! Though it only has 160 pages it is full of so many stories and insider insights into what it is like on the road and in the industry. This book is a great addition to any Michael W. Smith fan. It is not a truly deep book, but what it does give is encouragement and insights as well as spiritual guidance. The underlying message in this book is to live a selfless life and to be a bloessing for others. What better message can we all live with, and what better message can each of us instill within our children. I cannot think of anything better!

Book Review -The Principle of the Path

About the Book
Your Direction, not Your Intention, Determines Your Destination. There is often a tension between where we want to end up in life and the path we choose to get there. We fail to see that having good intentions is never good enough. Like Charlie Brown, we wrongly believe there’s something to be said for trying hard. We need to understand why, in spite of our good intentions, we may have ended up at the wrong destination with our finances, our marriages, our careers, or a host of other dreams. So how do we get from where we are to where we truly want to be? The Principle of the Path is a road map to proper direction and discipline.

My Take on the Book
This book takes a very personal approach to helping you figure out how to make a plan to start changing your life for the better. Andy takes a step-by-step approach to provide the reader a book that is easy to understand and filled with humorous stories and a conversational style that makes you want to continue reading. I know that I found myself plowing through this book, as I didn't want to put the book down. I also found myself re-reading sections to completely understand the intent as it was hard-hitting, and it did make you assess yourself.

The book was not what I expected, it was better. Knowing that the author was a pastor, I expected more sermonizing, but I did not receive it. His style was much more personal, to the extent that you think of yourself as having a conversation with the author himself, and his words surround you and make you want to ask more.

The book's intent was subtle, but this book did portray and share a message that must be shared with all!

I highly recommend The Principle of the Path. The book has a very valuable message that should be shared with all!

My Take on the DVD
We love the Veggie Tales! As a family, these characters are ones that as parents we know will instill great values and share a message that is worth sharing! In watching this movie, the standard only continues. We all shared laughs and there was even a little dancing when music was played. Outside of the great message of the meaning of Easter, one of the things that I was also impressed with was the fact that they shared in the bonus features that Veggie Tales was teaming up with World Vision. I love seeing when people give back and am constantly trying to share this with my own daughters! Bravo!

DVD Review - THE MOST: The Deluxe Edition

About the Movie
MOST, the Czech word for "The Bridge," is a fitting title for this 21st-century parable about a loving father, his young son, and the fateful day when they attempt to head off an impending rail disaster. Hundreds of passengers aboard an oncoming steam train are completely unaware of the danger that looms as they head toward an open drawbridge.

As a desperate young woman witnesses an act of mercy beyond imagination, her life is changed forever—as are the lives of all who see this film. Both heart wrenching and glorious, MOST vividly portrays the greatest offering of love, sacrifice, hope, and forgiveness known to man

My Take on the Movie
This movie was an amazing one that as a father you are amazed at. The movie is short, but filled with so much symbolism and meaning. The love that a father has for his son is seen throughout this film. You also see so many parallels between religion and the movie with a father giving up his only son. This movie was one that will lead to much conversation from all who watch.

This was an awesome film and one that I would recommend to all!

Book Review -Always True: God's 5 Promises for When Life is Hard

About the Book
Follow bestselling author, speaker, and pastor James MacDonald as he delivers the biblical hope of God’s promises in the midst of life’s storms.

2 Peter 1:3 refers to certain portions of God’s Word as exceedingly great and precious promises. GreatPrecious promises are ones that we find strong enough to hold us up and resilient enough to get us through. God’s promises become exceedingly great and precious to us when nothing else will do. By way of digging into the theology of God’s Promises, Pastor James uncovers 5 major categories of promise in the Bible and the 5 areas about which God repeatedly makes promises. From what to do with fear and doubt to God’s goodness, help, and victory—the Bible has much to say about God’s presence in our difficulty. promises are ones that don’t fall apart during difficult times; they reveal hope in the midst of the storm.

Last year, Pastor James released When Life is Hard to point you toward hope in the midst of trials. Always True will point you to God’s promises, which are always true.

About the Author

JAMES MACDONALD received his BA from London Baptist Bible College in Ontario, his MA in 1988 from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois and his D.Min from Phoenix Seminary in 1996. He is the founding and senior pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.
Pastor MacDonald is the author of Lord, Change My Attitude...Before It’s Too Late, Gripped by the Greatness of God, I Really Want to Change ... So, Help me God, Seven Words to Change Your Family; God Wrote a Book, Downpour, Ancient Wisdom, Way of Wisdom, Restore My Soul, and 10 Choices: A Proven Plan for Change.

Pastor MacDonald’s teaching, which emphasizes the precise exposition of God’s Word and its practical life application, can be heard on Walk in the Word (www.walkintheword.com), a daily 30-minute radio program heard on outlets across North America, and Listen Up, a one-minute feature, which can also be heard on numerous stations.

Pastor MacDonald and his wife, Kathy have three children and reside in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

My Take on the Book
This book, though not long, brings the reader to a place of remembrance and knowledge that God keeps his promises to the faithful. Through stories that will touch the soul, the author offers some tips and resources for people to know God better as well as walking the reader step-by-step towards the knowledge that there is a higher power that is holding each and every one up to the life situations that we have been faced with.

The author shares five promises that he feels all people must understand and remember:
(1) God is ALWAYS with ME. I will not fear.
(2) God is ALWAYS in CONTROL. I will not doubt.
(3) God is ALWAYS GOOD. I will not despair.
(4) God is ALWAYS WATCHING. I will not falter.
(5) God is ALWAYS VICTORIOUS. I will not fail.

MacDonald does a wonderful job taking these five statements and supporting them with both Scripture and experiences. The book is very practical and allows the reader to take what is important with them by helping them make the promises their own.

I recommend this book for individual or small group Bible study. All people who are trying to become closer to God will definitely take much from this book!

GRAMMY Nominee and American Idol Alum Mandisa to Release Empowering Third Studio Album

GRAMMY ® Nominee and American Idol Alum Mandisa
to Release Empowering Third Studio Album
What If We Were Real on April 5

Debut Single “Stronger” Receives Warm Welcome at Radio

Two-time GRAMMY ® nominee and American Idol Season Five Finalist, Mandisa, will release her third studio album on April 5 titled What If We Were Real.

Marked by its honesty and authenticity, What If We Were Real is a welcomed addition in the line up from Mandisa whose previous studio albums have conquered exploration of inner grace and personal emancipation. The 11 songs of joy, struggle, worship and redemption encourage shining the light on who we really are, including both the good and the bad. The theme of the record also coincides with parts of Mandisa’s journey as she has publicly discussed her own struggle with weight loss on Today, CNN Online, E! News Live as well as the pages of US Weekly and People.

“A struggle is a struggle, and Jesus is there through it all,” explains Mandisa. “He is there in compassion and grace. I have found that what He has spoken to me through these songs has been encouraging and I think that’ll be true for other people who are going through their own hard times.”

Produced from a trio of talent including Chris Stevens (Carrie Underwood, TobyMac), Dan Muckala (Amy Grant, MercyMe) and Chance Scoggins (Natalie Grant, Sandi Patty), Mandisa co-wrote three tunes on the new album. Amongst those include the title track as well as “Just Cry,” the most revealing track on the record that reassures listeners that it is acceptable, and even healthy, to release one’s feelings and emotions.

“Stronger” heralds What If We Were Real as 43 stations have already added the song since its release to radio on January 7.  “Stronger” is No. 29 on AC Monitored and No. 22 on AC Indicator charts as well as climbing the National Christian Audience Chart where it is currently No. 24. Inspired by the belief that surviving hardship makes us more resilient, the tune sums up the past year of Mandisa’s life.

“That song is very appropriate for me,” comments Mandisa. “When I look back on this year and reflect on the difficult things I’ve gone through, I realize I’ve grown the most not from when things were great, but from when they were hard. ‘Stronger’ is encouragement for anybody who is going through a similar time. As long as you’re still here and still walking through, you’ll be stronger in the end.”

Mandisa will be joining well-known comedian Anita Renfroe on the road for the “Girls Night Out with Mandisa & Anita Renfroe” tour starting in March and wrapping in June. For a complete list of tour dates, visit www.mandisaofficial.com.
