Man on the Street: Fernando Torres

Kissy face.

Footballer Fernando Torres arrives in London.

We applaud the layering, which is surprisingly well done. And he looks pretty good, all things considered. We challenge anyone to get off a plane looking chic and fresh as a daisy. But we had an ulterior motive for posting this, aside from the obvious motive of simply wanting to look at a cute boy. We're going to do a stealth YEA or NAY on this one. You see, during our editorial meeting, we were debating whether this was an interesting enough look to discuss, when we both admitted something that neither of us really knew about the other: we can't stand denim jackets.

Now before you get all up in our faces like the time Lorenzo admitted he hates pea coats, do NOT take this as some sort of dictum. Although to be fair, Lorenzo did slip in that he thinks they're kind of a cliche and Tom responded that they go in and out of style all the time so they're closer to "classic" than "cliche." But really, it's just that neither of us have ever been able to pull off the look. Lorenzo doesn't really do casual, at least not in the denim jacket sense, and Tom looks like Jethro every time he tries one on.

So we put the following questions to you, our beloved minions:

Denim jackets: classic or cliche?
Can you pull it off?
Does footballer Fernando Torres make your pants move?

Discuss.

WERQ it, space bitches.

In all honesty, we're only featuring this screencap because of the semi-naked men. We're so ashamed.

It's kind of cute how the match their underwear to the set.

Okay, the psychic thing was weird and none of the queens really seemed to know where to go with it but we do love this show for subtly parodying the inanity of a lot of reality TV competitions. Why not do a psychic challenge? It's no more random or less revealing of talent than asking someone to make a wedding gown in 12 hours.

Forcing the queens to bring their acting skills to the table is like an unconventional materials challenge on Project Runway. It may not be what the contestants normally do in their careers, but it separates the wheat from the chaff nicely. For all his bravado, Phoenix was truly awful.

Sure, drag queens don't always "act" in the conventional sense, but this material didn't really require Streep-level talent (someone needed to tell Mimi that). It's a chance for the queens to show what kind of performers they are.

This is a true drag superstar, darlings. A lot of queens would have been pissed that they had to play a monkey, but our gal took it and ran with it, making it the most glamorous space monkey you ever saw.

And who knew Stacey Layne had it in her to bring Maya Angelou to the table?

But Shangela and Alexis were the real surprises here. You could tell they worked hard to get their performances right and it paid off. Mimi might have been the most polished of the performers, but she went off in a scenery-chewing direction that was uncomfortable to watch. These gals played it just right, which was all the more impressive because they couldn't stand each other.

We'll get to all the catwalk looks in another post and we'll get to the winners/loser in a second, but first:

LUV. HUH. She seemed a bit befuddled by the whole thing, but when it came time to make performing critiques, she gave very on-point advice.

And can we just say we love that this show is ghetto enough to do a blurb right in the middle of an episode for boobsforqueens.com? How can you not love that?

So anyway...Condrags to Alexis and Shangela!

They are turning out to be the biggest bitches on the show - and we're a little disappointed in Shangela's behavior backstage - but they were hands down the best of the bunch this week. You can see they really put the work in, both in their performances and in their costumes.

And it's a sad sayonara to Phoenix.

We have an appreciation for that whole genderfuck thing, but the fact of the matter is, he's too masculine to be the kind of queen Ru's looking for. Couple that with a truly cringe-inducing performance and a lackluster lip synch (which Delta freaking NAILED) and this too was a no-brainer.

And besides, who doesn't love that Stacey Layne got the last laugh? It seems like the show is really trying to address its previous "big girl problem" and is going out of its way to make sure they all get a fair chance. We thought Mimi was going to be the one to root for but she's turning out to be a big ol' mess. Give us Miss Delta and Miss Stacey Layne any day.

Vanity Fair’s 2011 Hollywood Issue

J'adorable.

During our standard morning editorial meeting (coffee, us, and three cats), Lo says to T, "Say, T," he says, "Why don't we do a post on the Vanity Fair annual Hollywood cover, which just came out?"
"Lo, my darling," replied T, "Is it another Liebovitz-style cover with a dozen stars in millions of dollars worth of clothing and jewelry staring blankly at the camera?"
"You have surmised correctly, dearest," said Lo.
"Ugh. So tired."
"Just take a look at it."

Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence,
Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, and Noomi Rapace.

Hunh. That's actually a pretty hot picture.

“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance,” says fashion and style director Jessica Diehl. “We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring's gowns—from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent—and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.”

Alright, yes. It's still the same cover they've been putting out for 20+ years, but this doesn't actually look as tired as we thought it would.

Observations:

* Say what you will about Anne Hathaway, that girl's got presence.

* Gyllenhaal, on the other hand, doesn't. Bored, we sat through that Prince of Persia movie the other night and we were shocked at what a charisma void he is. Cute, but doesn't exactly command attention.

* Is it us, or is this an unusually varied mix of practical-unknowns, up-and-comers, current stars, and one old veteran?

* Does Duvall look like he's thinking "What the fuck am I? The babysitter?"

* How is it they always get one girl to wear the really slutty dress when all the other ones are dressed formally? We salute you, Olivia Wilde. There must be a LOT of tape keeping that thing on.

* Obviously, we don't have a problem with glamour, but we really do think this type of picture is a bit played out on VF's end. Just once, we'd like them to do a Hollywood cover that really surprises people. When you have some world-class attractive people, many of whom have world-class charisma and performing skills, there are so many interesting ways to portray that other than glamming it up, old-school style. In fact, we think the behind-the-scenes photos are more interesting than the cover:

In or Out: Emily Blunt in Andrew Gn

Something suddenly came up.

Emily Blunt attends the UK Film Premiere
of 'Gnomeo And Juliet' in London in Andrew Gn.

Last week she attended the L.A. premiere of this film in a dress that the T Lo commentariat decried as too slutty by half with her side boobs popping out all over the place and waving themselves in people's faces. Kittens, it was just awful. Clearly, she read the bitchery emanating from the T Lo comments section and said "Those rotten BITCHES. I'll show them. I'll wear a dress so sugary sweet and virginal you'll get a cavity AND a hymen just by looking at it! Assholes." And thus it came to pass. Do you see what you've done, darlings?

Actually, it's a really cute dress. We love the eyelet details. The shape reminds us of something Marcia Brady might have worn in between getting hit in the face with footballs and trying to seduce her step-brother. We like the black tights but we think she missed an opportunity to wear a pair in an interesting color or with a pattern. The dress is such a blank slate, she had a chance to have a little fun with the accessories. Still, we can't complain - Oh, wait. We just did. Well, here's another: the hair's a bit limp. Anyway, yes we CAN complain, but overall, we think she looks cute here. IN.
