The Complete List of 66 Teacher Discounts

Teacher discounts don't often receive the same attention as those specifically for students, but educators need not frown -- there are plenty to be had.

Along with classroom supplies and other learned goodies like books, numerous teacher discounts are offered nationwide, ranging from laptops and Photoshop to museum entry and cell phone plans. Gift Card Granny has compiled a list of 66 top-notch discounts spanning nine categories, both online and off. A sampling:
  • The Container Store: The organizational aficionados provide a 15 percent discount on all items through the Organized Teacher Program. Register online for a free discount card to use for in-store and online purchases. If you visit a store, be sure to have your school ID.
  • Borders: Register for the Classroom Discount Card, a brand-spanking-new program that entitles librarians and teachers 25-percent off most purchases. The discount is for those who teach preschool to high school and available in-store only.
  • The Limited: Show a school ID or valid pay stub when you shop at any The Limited location and snag 15-percent off your entire order. The offer is good for all items on the racks, walls or tables. In other words, everything.
  • Bose: The Bose offer is prime, particularly for those in need of sonic stimulation. Variable discounts are available on all music systems and accessories. Call the Customer Focused Development Team at 1-800-353-4027 for pricing and to place an order.
  • Cell Phone Companies (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile): This discount is a tad tricky to redeem but can save loads on a personal cell phone bill, sometimes up to 20 percent a month. Visit your providers business or discount portal and input your .edu e-mail address to check if your institution is registered. Example: Search "Verizon business discount" in an engine and click on the first result to check your discount or register.
  • National Park Service: Show a valid school ID at a slew of National Park Service visitor centers across the nation and receive 15-percent off any purchase. The discount doesn't apply to park entry or camping fees.
  • John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art: Present a valid school ID at the box office to snag a discounted day pass at the estate-turned-gallery in Sarasota, Fla. The museum, named for John Ringling of Ringling Brothers circus fame, is located at 5401 Bay Shore Road.
The Gift Card Granny list provides information where a deal can be redeemed, how to register for certain reward programs and, of course, the extent of a discount. Rules and conditions change from store to store, yet nearly all of the 66 deals are available year-round for teachers of every brand, including elementary school, high school, university and home school. Download "The Complete List of 66 Teacher Discounts" to sooth these oft-neglected educators with something more rewarding than the routine "apple for teacher."

What Parents Need to Know About "Bath Salts" and Drug Highs

Kids and young adults are buying fake bath salts on the internet and getting high.  But these are very dangerous products and states are moving to ban them immediately. Here is the most recent overview by one of our doctors that you are free to reprint. May I also suggest that you ask your readers to add this to their cell phones for weekly updates and poison tips?  Text TIPS to 69866.  And they can follow poison control on Twitter @poisoninfo as well as on Facebook at California Poison Control System.   Thanks so much, Susan.

“Bath Salts”, Extremely Dangerous New Drugs of Abuse by Richard J. Geller, MD, MPH, California Poison Control System

Beginning in September, 2010, US poison control centers began to receive reports of patients ill from the effects of a series of previously unreported drugs of abuse collectively known as “bath salts”.  These agents have nothing to do with bathing, and, like the synthetic cannabinoids marketed as “spice”, are marketed as something other than what they really are.  Most recent data as of this week is that U.S. poison centers took 236 calls for 2010. We are at 220 to date for 2011.

“Bath salts” are powders, which are often sold in 250 mg amounts, packaged in either small zip-lock bags or in jar-like containers, costing $15-65.  Like methamphetamine, they are ingested, snorted, smoked or injected, and have been placed in the rectum and vagina.  Users are most often males aged 20-25 years.

What is known about “bath salts” is that they combine the more dangerous effects of a number of previously identified drugs of abuse: visual and sometimes auditory hallucinations similar, and possibly worse, than LSD, rapid tolerance and craving similar to crack cocaine, extremely violent behavior similar to PCP and methamphetamine, an unusually long duration of effect and psychotic behavior which may not resolve after the drug is eliminated from the body.

“Bath salts” were first observed in Louisiana, where over two hundred exposures have been reported to the Louisiana Poison Control Center.  Several “bath salt” users have mutilated themselves with knives; one shot himself in the head.  Law enforcement officials believe that eventually they will have to use extreme force with “bath salt” users.  Visual hallucinations caused one user to barricade himself in an attic with a shotgun, threatening to kill the occupants of the home.  Significant “bath salt” use is now being reported in Kentucky, Florida, Mississippi and Missouri.

On both the federal and state levels, “bath salts” have been legal to sell and to use.  Louisiana’s Secretary of Health and Hospitals signed an emergency declaration in January 2011 banning the sale of “bath salts” in that state, resulting in an immediate slowing of reports of illness to the state’s poison control center.  Other states are considering similar measures.

The most common substance identified in “bath salts” is                                 3,4-
Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, and marketed as Ivory Wave and Energy-1.  Commonly found is Mephedrone, also known as 4-Methylmethcathinone, a compound very similar in structure to Methamphetamine, and marketed as Bounce, Bubbles, M-CAT, Mad Cow and Meow Meow.  Other substances implicated as “bath salts” are 3,4-Methylenedioxymethcathinone (Methylone), 4-Methoxymethcathinone, 4-Fluoromethcathinone and3-Fluoromethcathinone.  The latter 4 substances are derivatives of Methcathinone, also known as Khat, Jeff and Cat, a drug structurally and pharmaceutically similar to methamphetamine.  Methcathenone has a long history as a drug of abuse in Asia.

The Louisiana experience suggests that law enforcement personnel encountering “bath salt” users should be prepared to deal with extremely confused (visual hallucinations) and possibly very violent individuals who may be armed.  Health care professionals encountering “bath salt” users should be aware that the usual sedative medications, i.e., benzodiazepines, may not be effective, and that major tranquillizers, especially ziprasidone, have been useful.

The California Poison Control System believes that “Bath Salt” products are a grave danger to public health, and urges that immediate steps be taken to ban their sale in California

Working Mother Media Launches Research Institute

Hot off the 25th anniversary of the pioneering Working Mother 100 Best Companies in October, Working Mother Media announces the creation of the Working Mother Research Institute (WMRI). Core to Working Mother Media’s mission of supporting cultural change, the WMRI tracks best practices in Corporate America and around the global to deliver the thought-provoking research needed to push forward new ideas for supporting and advancing working mothers at work and home.

Working Mother insider Jennifer Owens has been tasked as Director of the WMRI, reporting directly to Working Mother Media President Carol Evans. A longtime researcher and award-winning journalist, Owens formerly served as Senior Director, Editorial Research & Initiatives of Working Mother magazine and has been with the organization for three years.

“Understanding the challenges and concerns of working mothers is paramount to providing the programs and support they need to thrive at work—and at home,” said Owens. “In addition to Working Mother Best Companies, which has been the impetus for major advancements by America’s leading companies, the Working Mother Research Institute will deliver studies on issues ranging from flex-time and worklife balance to company culture and how moms make choices in this country and around the world.”

With unique insight into this powerful and decision-making demographic of working women, Working Mother Media, a division of the international media company Bonnier, has attracted a number of high-profile partners in advancing its research. In 2010, Working Mother Media released What Moms Think: The Working Mother Report with the support of Ernst & Young, IBM and Procter & Gamble. Other 2010 research projects were supported by Texas Instruments, WellStar and Deloitte, including a study of professional women in India.

“Working Mother has been amassing research for over 25 years now, and the data we’ve collected offers an unprecedented look at the advancement of women in the workplace,” added Evans. “The Working Mother Research Institute allows others to tap into this tremendous resource, while also harnessing new research efforts that are bigger, better and more comprehensive than ever before.”

2011 will see the release of several new reports, including What Moms Choose: The Working Mother Report, a follow-up to 2010’s What Moms Think. Upcoming issues of Working Mother will share two new offshoots of Working Mother’s powerful Best Companies initiatives: 10 Best Companies for Women’s Advancement (February/March) and 10 Best Companies for Kids (August/September). The Working Mother Flex Primer, a 200+-page book, will provide business, HR and diversity leaders with a clear understanding on the best ways to serve an increasingly agile and global workforce.
